Understanding the properties of manuka honey

Originally from New Zealand, manuka honey is produced by bees that pollinate the flowers of Leptospermum scoparium, better known as manuka. This honey is distinguished by its powerful antibacterial properties thanks to the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO), an active compound that gives it its worldwide reputation.

The antiseptic and antifungal properties of manuka honey make it a valuable ally for treating various skin conditions such as acne, eczema, or even superficial wounds. Furthermore, this honey can also be used to improve respiratory comfort and treat sore throats.

Skin application

Topical application of manuka honey can help treat several skin problems. Simply apply a thin layer of honey to the affected area, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. This can accelerate the healing of minor wounds and burns while reducing inflammation.

In case of acne, using a manuka honey mask can reduce redness and inflammation. Apply the honey directly to pimples, leave for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat two to three times per week for optimal results.

Respiratory comfort

Manuka honey can also relieve symptoms of respiratory infections and seasonal allergies. A teaspoon of this honey taken daily can strengthen the immune system thanks to its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Additionally, mixed with a lemon and ginger infusion, it helps soothe irritated throats and improve breathing.

Applications of manuka essential oil

Manuka essential oil is extracted from the leaves and branches of manuka. It shares several beneficial properties with manuka honey, but it also has its own unique advantages. This essential oil is often used in aromatherapy for its relaxing and purifying effects.

Thanks to its antifungal properties, manuka essential oil is effective against fungal infections such as nail fungus or candidiasis. It also has antiviral properties that can help prevent and treat certain viral infections.

Skin benefits

For skin care, manuka essential oil is often diluted with a carrier oil like coconut oil or sweet almond oil before being applied to the skin. It can be used to treat acne, rashes, and other irritations. A few drops added to your usual body lotion can amplify its moisturizing and cleansing effects.

In case of itching or minor irritations, applying a few drops of manuka essential oil mixed with a neutral oil can provide quick relief and prevent infection.

Aromatherapy and relaxation

Inhaling manuka essential oil, whether through a diffuser or direct inhalation, can help calm the mind and reduce stress. Add a few drops to a hot bath to enjoy a moment of relaxation while benefiting from its therapeutic properties for the skin and respiratory tract.

A few drops of manuka essential oil can also be added to a natural candle or potpourri to purify the air in your home while bringing a touch of soothing freshness.

Combining manuka essential oil and manuka honey

One of the best ways to benefit from these two products is to combine them. For example, you can prepare a facial mask by mixing a tablespoon of manuka honey with two drops of manuka essential oil. Apply it to the face, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This treatment will leave your skin soft, hydrated, and purified.

To improve your body care routine, add a few drops of manuka essential oil to a generous amount of manuka honey. Use this mixture as a gentle body scrub or as a soothing treatment after shaving.

Homemade formulas

  • Soothing muscle blend: Dilute 5 drops of manuka essential oil in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond oil) and add a teaspoon of manuka honey. Gently massage sore muscles with this preparation.
  • Hair care: Add a few drops of manuka essential oil to your usual shampoo. For a nourishing hair mask, mix a tablespoon of manuka honey with two tablespoons of coconut oil and apply to dry hair before washing.
  • Anti-blemish treatment: Mix one drop of manuka essential oil with a small amount of manuka honey and apply directly to pimples. Leave for 15 minutes then rinse.

Natural remedies

For small cuts and abrasions, applying pure manuka honey directly to the wound can protect against infections thanks to its antibacterial properties and accelerate healing.

In case of nasal congestion, inhaling steam from a solution containing a few drops of manuka essential oil in a bowl of hot water helps open the airways and promotes respiratory comfort. This method is particularly beneficial during cold seasons or in case of a cold.

Practical tips for safe use

It is crucial to follow some safety guidelines when using manuka essential oil and manuka honey. For example, essential oil should always be diluted before skin application to avoid irritation. Do a skin tolerance test by applying a small amount of diluted product to the inside of your wrist before widespread use.

For manuka honey, make sure to choose a quality product, ideally UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) certified. A high UMF index guarantees a higher concentration of MGO, thus enhanced effectiveness. Store honey in a cool, dry place to preserve its properties.

Recommended dosages

Respect recommended dosages for each use to maximize benefits without risk. For manuka essential oil, generally use between 1 to 5 drops depending on the density of the chosen carrier oil. As for manuka honey, daily consumption of one teaspoon is sufficient for internal benefits, while a thin layer will suffice for skin applications.

Finally, consult a healthcare professional before using these products if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or following specific medical treatment. Although natural, their possible interactions should not be neglected.
